The Unspoken Value in Cloud Versus a Traditional Network

In 2021 I wrote a post about the Cloud Versus a Traditional Network: A Comparison of Costs.   In it, I described, in a very traditional way,  how each client has a unique set of circumstances and needs that will factor into the cost savings and benefits of their network and server environment. In the four years since this was written, new aspects of savings have replaced several of the calculation’s factors for savings.

As a refresher, here is where the savings were found in the 2021 post.

  • Cost Savings: Avoids new hardware and software purchases.
  • Reduced Downtime: Less downtime and fewer system crashes.
  • Efficiency: Cloud services costs decline over time

Cybercrime Growth

It is now 2025, four calendar years and approximately twenty-eight dog “years” since that post. The change that is having the largest impact, and more than worthy of attention, is the growth of the cybercrime market. The chart below indicates that the sky is the limit for growth.

In 2021, the estimated cost of cybercrime was $5.99 trillion. In 2025, it is predicted to increase by 195% to $17.65 trillion. In the presence of this increase, the most economical change that needs to happen is to eliminate as many insecure and traditional approaches to servers and applications. Moving to the cloud presents the easiest method to accomplish this with a straightforward priority.

Changes in User Access

Way back in 2021, the best way to grant access for users to remote servers was by using remote desktop protocols or RDP. Due to the ever-expanding cybercriminal market and the classically insecure nature of RDP, a change is more than warranted. Today access to servers is best accomplished by using a remote desktop application. From the ground up, this new approach was designed and developed to thwart cyber criminals and thieves. The good news is that this works in deterring criminals.

Minimize your Risk

The bottom line is that in the face of all the cyber threats to business, large and small alike, there is value in making changes that take your data away from traditional architectures and historically insecure environments.  These changes are only hard at the beginning and much easier to maintain over the long run.
